Hello powder white beaches and crisp, blue ocean waves! Today we arrived in beautiful Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. For many of us, the day began early with a 7:30AM flight out of Columbia, South Carolina. After a short flight connecting in Atlanta, we embarked on our 3 hour journey to visit Punta Cana!
Upon arrival, we were greeted with Dominican hospitality as we were shuttled to a private entrance and were able to bypass lines in customs. We then met Dr. Harrill and rode a short shuttle to our resort, located on the same property as the airport. Many of us had not experienced such luxury as we were offered refreshments upon arrival and offered a ride on the “island taxi” to our hotel rooms.
Dr. Harrill graciously gave us free time to explore the resort property and bond with our travel mates. Many students spent the afternoon sunbathing in hammocks, enjoying social time at the lobby bar , or stocking up on necessities at the local Dominican grocery store.
The group finally met as one cohesive unit for dinner at La Tortuguilla, a restaurant for employees of the resort. There, we enjoined fried plantains, cooked vegetables, and rice and met our host Benjamin. He taught us that the Dominican Republic is the most traveled tourist destination in the Caribbean and that Punta Cana is the most desired city in the country to be traveled to.
